What is Botulinum Toxin (Botox / Dysport / Xeomin)?
Botulinum Toxin therapy is available and registered in New Zealand in three forms: Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®. Your Cosmetic Medicine Practitioner will determine which product is best for you. This product is a natural, highly purified protein that is extracted from the bacteria, Clostridium Botulinum, in a similar way that penicillin is from mould. The product is produced under strictly regulated conditions.
How quickly will I see results?
You may see results in as early as 2-3 days, however typically improvement is noticed in 5-7 days. The peak effect is between 10-21 days after treatment.
What happens during the treatment?
A full medical history will be taken prior to your treatment and you will have an opportunity to discuss any aspects with your Cosmetic Physician. You will need to complete a consent form before treatment.
Your NURSE will determine exactly where to use the product to achieve the best results for you. No local anaesthetic is required, although your Nurse may use ice if required. Tiny amounts are injected into selected facial muscles using a very fine needle. Discomfort is minimal and only lasts for a few seconds.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?
Botulinum Toxin treatment works by relaxing wrinkle-causing muscles to create a softer, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. With repeated treatments your lines gradually soften, and new lines are prevented from forming.

Every 3 months based on the recommended dose of 20 Units per treatment session.
• Xeomin might have the slowest “onset” of action of the 3 (Dysport onset in 24 hours, Botox onset in 72 hours, and Xeomin onset in 4 days but duration is the same of 2-4 months of all the three products)
• Xeomin may be “mildly more convenient” than Botox or Dysport, as the “product’s lack of complex proteins will help prevent antibody formation, or resistance to neuromuscular treatment with botulinum type A toxin, in patients being treated for neuromuscular conditions.”
• Neurotoxins diffuse differently, in part because Botox and Dysport have protective proteins clustered around the active part of the molecule, while Xeomin has no protective proteins.
• Dysport has been shown to “drift” or diffuse more than Botox, increasing the chances of an accidental droopy eyelid or unintentional relaxation of a neighboring muscle due to diffusion of the product.
• Botox and Dysport and Xeomin are not interchangeable because the products are dosed and injected differently.

How long does a Botulinum Toxin treatment last?

The effects from botulinum toxin typically last 2 to 4 months. Treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) may last up to one year (the average is 6 months).
Will I look plastic or frozen?
If your treatment is administered properly, by a highly-trained doctor or nurse, you will still be able to show expression. Depending on the area treated, it may be appropriate to only soften the muscle movement. You can discuss this with your Clinician prior to treatment.
Most patients are extremely happy with the results of their treatment. The most common comment made by friends and family of patients after receiving treatment is that they appear to be more “rested”.
What areas can be treated?
In New Zealand, botulinum toxin is registered for use in frown lines between your eyebrows, and on your forehead. However, it is also successfully used in the ‘crow’s feet’, smokers’ lines around the mouth and treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), for tension-migraine headaches and many other facial and neck areas.
What aftercare do I need?
We advise you don’t rub the treated area, lie down for 3 hours after the treatment or have a facial within a week of treatment. We also encourage abstaining from vigorous exercise for the remainder of the day.
What side effects could occur?
Possible side-effects include tenderness and mild bruising at the injection site and a slight headache in the first few days after your initial treatment. The drooping of an eyelid or eyebrow is uncommon, and if this occurs it is only temporary. Muscles and anatomy are unique in everyone, which may result in an asymmetrical effect. This is easily correctable at your complimentary review within 14 days of treatment. There have been no permanent side effects reported
Who should not be treated?
Botulinum Toxin has not been studied in pregnancy, and it is therefore unknown if foetal harm will result if a pregnant woman is treated with Botulinum Toxin. Therefore, the use of Botulinum Toxin is not recommended during pregnancy. Additionally, it is unknown if Botulinum Toxin (botulinum A exotoxin) is excreted in breast milk, where it could affect a nursing infant. Therefore, Botulinum Toxin treatment is not recommended for use in lactating women.
Patients with neuromuscular disease, such as myasthenia gravis and Eaton-Lambert syndrome, should not be treated with Botulinum Toxin as it may worsen these conditions. Of course, anyone who has had an allergic reaction to Botulinum Toxin should not be treated.

Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure. A charge applies. Dysport®treatment lasts about four months and after this time further courses of treatment may be necessary. Speak to your specialist about your own situation.

Xeomin® is a Prescription Medicine containing 50, 100 LD50 Units of clostridium botulinum Type A toxin complex for injection. It is used for the treatment of frown lines on the forehead in adults. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure in appearance medicine. Xeomin® treatment lasts about four months and further courses of treatment may be necessary. Cautions: Generalised disorders of muscle activity; Infection or inflammation at the proposed injection sites, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects: headache, pain, swelling or infection at injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eye lids, lack of feeling & nausea. You will need to pay for this medicine. You’ve surely heard the word “lymph” or are familiar with the concept of “lymphatic drainage,” but do you really know what this is and what it means for your appearance?

A seborrhoeic keratosis is one of the most common non-cancerous skin growths in older adults. While it is possible for one to appear on its own, multiple growths are more common.
Seborrheic keratosis often appears on the face, chest, shoulders or back. It has a waxy, scaly, slightly elevated appearance.

Blemishes

“Blemish” is a broad term that refers to any type of skin mark. There are numerous types of blemishes. Can be red, white, brown, black or grey in colour.
Scarring of the skin occurs when the dermis layer becomes damaged. The dermis is the deep layer of skin where small blood vessels (capillaries), sweat glands, hair follicles, and nerve endings are located. Anything that causes the skin to open can lead to scarring, such as a wound or popped pimples. An overproduction of melanin can cause uneven skin tone or dark patches.
The causes of hyperpigmentation include:
sun exposure
acne scarring
hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy
Infections
Certain types of skin infections can cause blemishes to erupt on the skin. These include Malassezia folliculitis (fungal acne), an infection in the hair follicles. This condition is caused by an overgrowth of yeast and causes pustules to form.

Acne may have a genetic link. Certain hereditary conditions can also cause blemishes to occur.
Sun exposure
Overexposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) A and B rays can cause skin cancer,
hyperpigmentation, and other forms of skin damage.
Clogged pores
An overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands can cause blemishes. Hormonal changes often trigger this overproduction, such as puberty. Excess oil can mingle with dead skin cells, dirt, or bacteria. This results in pimples, pustules, blackheads, and whiteheads to form.
Pores can become clogged from products, such as makeup, sunscreen, or moisturizers. Look for products labeled as noncomedogenic. These are designed to not clog pores.

Hairstyling products can also clog pores if they get onto your face.
Environmental toxins, such as dirt, car exhaust, and pollution, can sit on your skin, mingle with oil, and clog pores. You can also transfer dirt and bacteria onto your face by touching your face with your hands.
Diet
What you eat might have an impact on your skin. Food allergies and contact dermatitis can both cause skin irritation and bumps. Dairy products, such as skim milk, may cause allergies to some people. Diets high in sugar and simple carbohydrates may also lead to blemishes.
Medications
Some prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications may cause acne as a side effect.
